Monthly Moon Celebrations

Tuva Camp 2008

Dear Friends

Thank you for your interest to our music.

Last summer we held a throat singing camp in Tuva.

We had 14 students from around the world - 8 of them were from the US, 2 from Australia
2 from Denmark, 1 from France, 1 from England.
After arriving in Tuva, the students spent 1 week in Kyzyl, the capital city.
They were able to see many tourist attractions, see a Tuvan shaman,
and attend the Naadym - National Harvest Celebration.

The students then went on to spend 1 week in the deep taiga, with members of the Tuvan throat singing group Chirgilchin,
learning various styles of throat singing, traditional Tuvan instruments, as well as the Tuvan language.

This summer, we are trying to get 2 groups to go to Tuva again, in either June or July.

I don’t know if any of you heard of the Joshua Tree Music Festival in Cali…but the same fella has put together another festival- Check out their myspace page. The 2nd annual Joshua Tree Roots Music Festival is happening October 20 and 21 at the Joshua Tree Lake Campground, in the shadows of the infamous National Park. This rootsicana newgrassy folkadelic experience is for music loving souls of all ages. The music is continuous, alternating on two stages in one bowl, creating an intimate festival experience. Temperatures in the magical Mojave desert in October are ideal!

The festival lineup includes The Avett Brothers, Hot Buttered Rum, Uncle Earl, The Greencards, Dan Bern, South Austin Jug Band, Jake Shimabukuro, Martha Scanlan, Merle Jagger & Tim Easton, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band, the Everybodyfields, Bluehouse, Honky Tonk Train, and the Trespassers.

Dr. Keeney has worked at some of the most respected psychotherapy centers in the United States. full moon at the ocean

I spent this full moon at the beach, wrapped in warm clothes and sticking my toes in the cold sand, listening to the waves and watching the twinkling of stars and campfires.

It was beautiful, and so cleansing to be out of the city, with the light of the moon shining down on me.

Ahhhh... I needed that so badly.

So this is the New Moon to discipline your demanding inner child, who rules you with feelings of impulsivity, selfishness, oppositionality, and impatience. Peacemaking really does begin at home.

Use this New Moon to reinvigorate your relationship with the inner warrior/warrioress. Though we need this part of ourselves to stand up and advocate for our positions, we also need to learn how to use this power appropriately. Create a meditation to discover or reconnect with your power teachers. With North Node, Sun and Moon in Aries, and Neptune, Chiron and Venus in erratic Aquarius, this is the New Moon to work on anger management skills. We must all learn to speak out, without acting out and causing harm to others. Studies show that being angry only serves to rehearse anger which in turn increases anger levels. Instead of blowing off steam, next time you feel angry, try reaching for the mindful compassion of an evolved Uranus and Mercury in Pisces, to increase thoughtfulness and maturity when expressing feelings of anger.

One more thing: Aries rules sports and exercise. Spring has arrived and if you have been couch-potatoing all winter long, it's time to get out and start moving your body! This is the ideal New Moon for starting an exercise program and making it a natural part of your daily routine. Just taking a 30-minute brisk walk each day can increase your health dramatically! For those of you who are already active and may want to take on a special challenge, this is the New Moon to initiate that dream of doing your first marathon or triathlon.

I have a disability, so having a car, even an ugly one that drives, is important to me.
I use it to get to work, and dancing. I work as a social worker.

Powerful Full Moon!!

Well! I have been hit by this moon- and all the other astrolical impacts this run around. I went from feeling homesick to feeling my power in LA to learning how to truely use my power. Adding to this intense pressure slowly building is a mutual aspect between Mars and Saturn. These two planets could not be more different than one another. Mars hits the accelerator while Saturn has its foot on the breaks. Saturn in Cancer creates fears and worries about how the repercussions of our actions will impact us. The need for control stems from the need for safety. In this context, Mars may feel as if it cannot fully express itself, creating some frustration. But Mars is the stronger of the two right now, so there is likely to be explosiveness as Mars acts out, rebelling against grim and pessimistic Saturn.

Fortunately, the Full Moon and Mars are also getting an encouraging aspect from benefic Jupiter. The planet of wealth and wisdom, Jupiter is a friend to both the Moon and Mars and supports their energies. Jupiter brings to the table a sense of optimism and generosity. In fair-minded Libra, Jupiter is helping teach us about equanimity and reciprocity. Jupiter will bring success and good fortune at this time, but not without some sacrifice. But Mars would not have it any other way. The warrior planet prefers a challenge in order to reach its goal anyway. Jupiter in Libra reminds us that we must give in order to receive.

Meanwhile, Venus the planet of love and beauty is making its way through Sagittarius as the evening star. You can see bright Venus to the west shortly after sunset, before any stars come out. Venus is the ruler of Libra, and Jupiter is the ruler of Sagittarius, so during the Full Moon Venus and Jupiter are exchanging signs, weaving together their meaning. Sagittarius has an expansive vision for principled living and beneficial growth, while Libra is a sign of clear _expression from the heart, in the form of beautiful art or insightful leadership. Together, these two are creating a lot of support for visionary leaders who want to change the world. The danger with this energy is zealotry and supremacist attitudes. The challenge with this combination is to maintain enthusiasm for your own vision while remembering there is still validity to viewpoints different than your own. With the Full Moon in aggressive Aries, and retrograde Mars having a serious showdown with Saturn, it is easy for differences of opinion to turn into heated battles.

Mars is not the only planet that is retrograde during the Full Moon. Another planet having recently gone retrograde is Mercury. Because this quick planet goes retrograde three times each year, it is the retrograde cycle we hear the most about. Instead of thinking of it as a time when communication breaks down, consider it a time when we all need to pay extra attention to our communication. Gaia Tribe Breaks to Eugene

Namaste' Portland oregon Gaia Tribe family. After an intense summer it looks like your Mate' will be taking a journey to Eugene for a while. I will be living there till perhaps Febuary.

This summer was a bit challenging for us up here in Portland. With a general under attendance at GT events it has made it very finantially and energetically hard on us to continue to be sustainable in the Portland scene (or what is left of it).

Currently the Eugene Scene is popping off so it's time for yours truely to go where that party is... Believe it or not in it's in Eugene more so than Portland currently by a long shot.

GT has been holding it down for the Portland underground for close to 8 years now... its not over we are just taking a pdx break. We will come back stronger and with more support come summer 2006. Lets just hope there are some other people consistantly throwing non-bar heady parties for the house and breaks community of Portland besides just GT and a small handful of others...

It's time to gather for a musical beach picnic and party, to celebrate the beauty of nature and our extended community, long Northwest summers, ecstatic music and dance, the harvest season, and the thinning of the veil.

Food (Salmon cooked NW style, on cedar stakes, dripping slowly by a fragrant cedar fire....mmmmm!)

Drums, Guitars, Didjeridoos, Fiddles, Mbiras etc.

Binoculars (to get closer to whales and stars and trees and birds and the moon)

Maybe we'll see some fire hoopers out there?

If there's some interest we can do a Zazobra ritual, which is kind of the original Burning Man, Yaqui/Sante Fe style (http://www.zozobra.com/history.html), a ritual of letting go of all that you choose to leave behind from the previous year, burning the written down sorrows, aggravations, and hindrances along with a paper/cotton effigy that embodies all of that, and then getting on with the party, celebrating like you always wanted to!

A sauna dome ("sweat-lodge") will also be created if people can bring together some lava rocks, willow or similar branches, and tarps/blankets.

Ridesharing is fun and recommended.

Please share this with all of the people who you want to celebrate with. There's plenty of room for all.

If you haven't found Hug Point yet, it's a good time for you to be introduced. Hug Point is a state park on the Oregon coast, a beautiful secluded area of beaches, caves, waterfalls, seastacks, forest, and sky. It's just 2 miles south of Canon Beach right off of highway 101, with plenty of parking, restrooms and a couple of picnic areas in the forest overlooking the beach. Camping is not permitted at Hug Point, but there is camping at Oswald Beach state park a couple miles further south.

Since the fields have been reaped, hunters can ride over the stubble, and can more easily see the fox, also other animals, which have come out to glean and can be caught for a thanksgiving banquet after the harvest. A very minor (6.8% coverage) partial eclipse of the Moon will take place between 7:34 and 8:32 a.m. EDT and will be visible from western and central sections of North America.

communities to worship with

hey all,

I'm still kind of new to Portland. I usually practice as a solitary (my preferred way), but every now and again I really want/need to connect with other people during ritual practice. I don't really know what the options are here, though I imagine there must be many.

I'm really turned off by groups that are goddess-centric to the point of being sexist and exclusionary. I ran into a couple of those in my home town and can't take it; it's also made me a little wary of searching for a group to participate with (unfortunately).

I live in the Northwest, don't drive, and don't usually take the bus, so I'd rather not have to go far. I'm also really damn busy with school and work, which is one of the many reasons why I usually practice alone, so I can't get invovled with a community that is going to expect a lot of participation from me beyond isolated events.

Any suggestions?

Full Moon in Aquarius

This is the Full Moon to honor freedom, idealism, humanitarianism, egalitarianism, and the revolutionary impulse toward reform, without causing harm to anyone. Aquarius is the impulse to raise-up everyone and leave no one behind. So in service to these calls to action, become responsible and find out what is really happening around you. Get involved in your community, volunteer your time, and raise awareness in your neighborhood. It's summer, have a block party and raise funds for a good cause. Notice I am staying far away from personal development. Resist the seductive, narcissistic impulses of Sun/Mercury in Leo and take a step into the reality-based ego-deflating world of Saturn in Leo.

This is the Full Moon for involvement in something bigger than you. Put together an Aquarian Full Moon, a serious Saturn in Leo, and open-hearted Jupiter/Venus in Libra, and we find ourselves resting deeply in the realization that as individuals we are not the center of the universe. So, this is the Full Moon to break down the attraction to focusing only on self-growth. Selfless giving to others is the real spiritual teaching and embodiment of a true Aquarian vision of working for the collective upliftment of all sentient beings.

With Saturn and Sun in Leo we really have to reach hard to hold the Aquarian side of the Aquarius/Leo polarity. This Full Moon is the time to actively integrate these two opposing energies. You cannot have one without the other. Though Leo is the sign with the greatest attachment to knowing and creatively expressing the self, many astrologers call Aquarius the sign of individuation.

This is due to the fact that Aquarian individuation goes past the Leo recognition of self to oneself: it proclaims self-knowledge to the community in the hope that this will awaken in others an awareness of their own condition. Remember that Aquarius rules the breakdown of the old ways by questioning the status quo. Those who create revolutionary change in societies are always the ones who can vision far beyond accepted beliefs and structures. In these troubled times, we all need to practice this kind of farsightedness.

This is the Full Moon to wake up, and get politically/spiritually active (two of the most powerful expressions of Uranus/Aquarius!) Remember "a government of the people, by the people and for the people"? I can hear the shouts that we have no real power. Well, we abdicated our power by clinging to a complacency that has become so common it is almost expected.

Free yourselves from the lies of the spin-doctors. Let go of your complacency and urge your family and friends to join you in speaking out against injustice, impoverishment and war. Get involved in working to fix our broken healthcare system, our air/rail transportation industries, and our financial system. Wake up everyone: our nation is in deep debt once again! Worst of all our government has a compulsion toward dictatorial use of power.

We need to question the authority of our government to make war upon any nation without due cause or direct threat. We need to question the authority of our government to spend billions on "security" while each day so many of its own citizens join the swelling ranks of the working poor; strapped to the max, struggling to make ends meet, and unable to afford medical care. America is asleep and it has made our nation suffer.

The New Moon in Cancer

Well, by now we could all use a little mothering. Thank Heaven there are Cancer people in the world wanting to take on the job and Cancer energy comes around on a regular basis. After the trauma some of us are having with transiting Pluto opposing the placements in Gemini, a retreat back in to the comfort of home and family may be very much on the agenda.

Having ventured out in the world despite the hazards, and picked up some new ideas, gathered in some valuable information about our growth and new directions, and done a little research and other homework, we need to pull back and process the things we know now that we didn't know earlier. Fortunately, Cancer energy carries heavy motivation and opportunities to do exactly that.

In terms of the creative process, this is a time of processing the raw materials you've assembled in response to your new inspirations -- and letting the subtle, inclusive wisdom of your subconscious mind have a chance to put things together for the initial presentation, the first public viewing soon to come when Leo energy arrives and brings the insistent impulse to shout, "Look at me!!"

In the neutralizing response to this last intense month of high-strung, highly mobile, and restless Gemini energy -- made more so by Pluto's aggravating influence in Sagittarius -- the soothing energy of Cancer urges more serenity; prompts a withdrawal into the protective recesses of your home, your family circle, and your private life; and promotes the occasions for you to reconnect with your own emotional center.

Abstractly, in the metaphors which are the heart and soul (oh, what a Cancerian concept) of Astrology, Cancer energy represents the establishment of emotional bonds and connections. Deep within ourselves, we are beginning to care about what exists and what we have decided to create. It's not just a neat idea, a curious possibility, or an intellectual concept anymore.

Our new beginnings formed in the time of Aries need more support now than just the physical care and feeding gained during Taurus or the awareness of its own existence that came with Gemini. Now it and we are establishing symbiosis, reciprocity, and recognizing an emotional component to what is happening.

Most notably now, we are feeling feelings and attachments, building a sense of family, putting down roots, nurturing our new creation as it acquires a consciousness of its own heritage and background, and constructing a home base with traditions and responsibilities toward family members who already exist.

With the arrival of the New Moon in Cancer, we really do have, on many levels, the astrological event of "coming home." Cancer energy is deeply concerned with matters of home, family, one's domestic surroundings, issues of ancestry, traditional culture, memories or and connections to "the past," and the emotional support and sustenance gained primarily through the conduct of one's private life.

Indeed, the Moon itself rules the sign of Cancer which in astrological terms represents a direct linkage and correlation between the symbolism each represents. Thus the Moon is very much "at home" in the soft, gentle, solicitous, responsive sign of Cancer.

Although many of us never find such ideal conditions, "home and family" is where we want to be understood without having to explain ourselves, unconditionally loved without having to necessarily deserve this, and provided with the support and protection we need before we even have to ask. Ideally we expect our families and our mothers in particular to intuit what we require and what is in our best interests ... and hand it over on the spot.

Again, this is the ideal -- the elusive dream and stereotype of the family circle. It rarely happens in real life, even in the best of situations ... but all of us keep on hoping and trying. That peculiar psychological fact of yearning after total acceptance and the knowledge that we have pleased and bonded with "Mother" ... is at the foundation of many psychological constructs, obsessions, longings, and efforts -- some of them chronic, futile, and tragic.

We may not want to literally return to the womb, but many of us -- perhaps all of us at some level -- would sure like to be received back into the all-nurturing, eternally caring, tender and doting embrace of "Mom" ... and endlessly welcomed home. These are our deepest longings and our most unseverable security issues. No matter who or what we are, these are part of us.

Moods, feelings and emotional attachments are "coin of the realm" where Cancer energy is concerned. And these things are all necessary to the successful establishment of a sense of family and the lasting, dependable security one is supposed to be able to find there. With Cancer energy, the effort is always being made to grasp that elusive ideal.

Cancers are famous -- and infamous -- for being passionate, sensitive people. Their range of feelings, with all the various hues and shades, includes in the whole spectrum of possibility. Indeed, like the Moon cycling through its different phases more rapidly than any other astrological entity, Cancers are changeable, reflective of, and profoundly influenced by the atmosphere around them, sensitive to both their own inner moods and fluctuations and to other people and outer circumstances.

The energies of both Cancer and the Moon are affiliated with the Jungian archetype of The Great Mother, the very embodiment of home and family on a trans-personal level. Thus both deal with profound, primitive, and even precognitive (dealing with levels of awareness that exist even prior to conscious thought) needs in all individuals -- perhaps even all life forms.

Thus Cancer / Moon energy is emphatically maternal, compassionate, dependable, perceptive, nurturing, intuitive, protective, resourceful, sympathetic, sentimental and caring. (As is the stereotype of what every mother is supposed to be.) This is the very essence of what "home and family" are intended to provide -- and descriptive of what a desirable private life is presumed to furnish.

Cancer is Cardinal Water energy, active and reactive simultaneously, containing perhaps the greatest polarity range of all the mysterious water signs within its own expressions. As changeable as females themselves are said to be, Cancer energy can be fiercely territorial and combative one instant, reduced to shy tears and hurt feelings the next.

It can stand its ground as well as any Aries in defense of those unable to fend well for themselves and heaven help the unwary intruder who wanders "too close for comfort" and looks in any way like a threat. One look at the way Nature's mothers of many famous (and infamous) species respond when their "family" is endangered will show this example in spades. Arguably whole species survive because of this.

Properly expressed, Cancer energy provides safety, support, a feeling of continuity and bonding, the promise of someone who cares always "being there" for you, and the joyful relief of being intuitively accepted and understood.

Indeed, the feeling of "having a home" and being welcome there always, is fundamental to a solid, dependable sense of personal well-being. It is this feeling that deep in our collective souls, humankind associates with the concept of "mother."

This passionate connection to the elemental ideas of home, children, and family -- representing as it does a deep alignment to the life force of the species in Cancer, moves out and becomes the merging and transmutable energy aligned with the universal procreative force in Scorpio, and the dissolving, transcendent energy aligned with the Divine Source itself, the primal well-spring of all life, in Pisces.

When this energy is not well-integrated into a personal chart, or when it conflicts with more preferred strategies, the results show themselves in actions and attitudes that are passive, emotionally unbalanced, repressed, resentful, clinging, dependent, fretful, anxious, compulsive, moody, complaining, depressed, and self-pitying.

In extreme cases, this energy can also be reclusive, unstable, paranoid and hysterical. The potential for serious family problems and emotional complications are obvious under these conditions --and examples are common in all our lives.

The polarity sign for Cancer is Capricorn -- Cardinal Earth. Cancer build structures to support offspring and members of the extended family in direct, individual, personal, essential, and everyday ways. Its involvement is intimate, intrinsic, essential, and familiar.

Capricorn builds structures to support the family by taking on the world and earning the "essential supplies" through professional pursuits, the acquisition of income, the achievement of status and prestige --which may reflect in the establishment of "a family name," a dynasty, or even royal lineage when done on a grand enough scale. Its involvements, while just as important, are more remote, detached, stern, objective, and concerned with standing, reputation, and governance.

With the arrival of the New Moon in Cancer, the theme of life's creative cycle -- and the focus of people in general -- becomes more cautious, intuitive, instinctive, sentimental, sympathetic, and traditional. There is extra emphasis on security issues, emotional connections, family matters, domestic circumstances, more attention to the condition and maintenance of one's home, and the conduct of one's private life.

People may also be concerned with their inner feelings, their ability to empathize with others, and with memories or other situations from their personal past. This can be a reclusive, private, introspective time, conducive to self-examination, re-alignment of one's emotional foundations and boundaries, and gaining insight into one's psychological center.

Under stress, people may be unusually touchy, resentful, dependent, fearful, moody, compulsive, habit-bound, obsessive, overwrought, depressed, self-pitying and fretful.

totally family vibe and fun deco, the best freaking outdoor food i have ever had... i swear, the oatmeal i had there this morning was simply the best oatmeal i have ever tasted and the community kitchen will be offering some crazy concoctions later in the weekend.

jees, i don't know what to say... i am at work without any sleep right now because of how beautiful the event is... i am working tomorrow at 10 after doing a 4 o clock set.. so sweet, such a beautiful time.

DIRECTIONS-

1) From the I-5 Freeway

a) If you are driving South on the I-5 Freeway from somewhere North of Portland then exit Lombard and go West, proceed for about about 5 miles into Saint John's and cross the Saint John's Bridge to the 30 North, then follow the directions below-from the 30 North.

b) If you are driving North on the I-5 Freeway from Southern Portland take the Freemont Bridge (405 Freeway) West to the 30 North and follow the directions below- from the 30 North.

2) From the 30 North- Take the 30 North along the Williamette River. After you pass the "leaving Portland" sign, and the "Saulvie Island 1 Mile" sign, take your first left on Newberry Road at the 10 mile marker.

-Go up the hill a half mile through a swithchback and the small dirt road entrance to the Location is on the right, ACROSS the street from 13220 Newberry Road. If you need to drop of any heavy supplies then please do so at the entrance of the little dirt road, please DO NOT drive down the little hill. there are turnouts on the side of Newberry road ahead that are O.K. for everyone to park in. Please park perpendicular to the road, not parallel, so people can pull out when they feel

You are welcome to carpool with me then- or travel on your own way~* The moon will be void on Sunday night- so purification will be in the air- you create your own journey and we will be present with you. Then the moon goes full into Sagitarius on Monday> HOWl at the Moon on Monday!!!

~Visual Deco Displays by many community folks and YOU, please bring out what you want to add---any media welcome sculptures, painting, etc......there will be a moon altar, sun altar, & then 4 direction/elemental altars, a fairy altar, and whatever else anyone wants to contribute.

-THINGS YOU MUST BRING**** Your own plate, cup, and towel(for a napkin) to eat at the community meals, please bring some firewood (we can not harvest the land) and most importantly...Love in an open mind, something to chill on, musical instruments, Positive creations to trade, camping supplies, the moment...
-There are plenty of different kinds of area's to camp wether you want to be near/not near the music, alone, or just chillin in pure epicness:) ******PACK IN PACK OUT---LEAVE NO TRACE---THIS IS NON-NEGOTIABLE---PLEASE RESPECT OUR MOTHER EARTH AND THESE GENEROUS LANDOWNERS*****

-CAMPING NEAR EACH OTHER IS ENCOURAGED!

This is a little off topic but...

I am planning a memorial day gathering with friends (no music or anything), and am trying to figure out places to go that will not be too cold (hopefully at least upper 50s-60s) and not too crowded. I was thinking strawberry wilderness in eastern oregon, but was wondering if y'all had other places maybe southward, less than 6hrs away, and that are somewhat warm this time of year. Any hot spring recommendations would rock too, that is ones beyond bagby and cougar. You can pm me if you don't want to give away secrets, thanks!

I'm hoping we can create a little library at the full moon event for folks to chill under a tent and be able to read or use osmosis to soak in som econsciousness expanding wisdom. I know you all have some favorite books or poems to share and so I hope you'll bring some out (label them so you get em back) for us all to share. (We'll have one of those little propane heaters in there to keep the dew from damaging them so please bring them out if you feel called to do so.
